A SYSTEM OF COMPATIBILITY

The PROTO Orion Deck was first introduced to the scooter world in 2010 as the debut of the Tunglok Deck Integration system also known as “TDI”. After only a brief two year run we were forced to cease production in order to focus our time and energy towards our other highly demanded products. After our SCS, wheel and handlebar production stabilized it was time to revisit the TDI vision. In the past three years deck extrusions have changed quite a bit and nearly every high end headtube has transitioned to integrated headset bearings. Unfortunately, these extrusions were already made and cut to size ready for a production run that never happened and have spent the last three years floating around on pallets in our warehouse and machine shop just waiting to be completed. Fortunately, TDI is not a deck, it is a patented system of compatibility for mating a headtube (neck) to a deck as two independent components which means we were able to design a new integrated neck for today’s market while still using the classic Orion extrusions with some cosmetic updates; a fact which lends itself well to the versatility of the TDI system.

NO COMPROMISES

Even though the decks were out of production and were not available to the public, Research & Design never stopped. Through the input of our team over the past five years, we have been able to fine tune and improve certain geometrical aspects of the scooter to adjust the way it rides and feels without compromising the TDI system itself.

ORION TDI

The Orion was the first production TDI deck system ever released. The name was a tribute to the constellation Orion where it originated with the 3 TDI hardware holes mimicking the 3 stars in Orion’s belt, the street that Andrew Broussard’s local skatepark, Carlsbad skatepark, is on, Orion Way and the name of a very generous and influential man who allowed Andrew to setup his first work shop rent free to get PROTO into orbit, Orion Burns. When the planets align, you must abide.

Orion TDI necks underwent constant updates to perfect the geometry. Initially they were released in a standard/non-integrated version with an 81.5º and 83º headtube angle options then later they were updated and re-released as an integrated version for using integrated headset bearings with only an 83º option.

Orion TDI decks also underwnet many profile revisions and dovetail clearance updates. They were available in many variations: 4″W x 19″L, 4.5″W x 20″L, 5″W x 20″L and 5″W x 21″L.

Some of these sizes are still available in the PROTO store while supplies last. The Orion TDI family is currently discontinued to make way for the new Space TDI family.

SPACE TDI

After tweaking the Orion as much as we could to improve the performance of each of it’s components we exhausted all possibilities and went back to the drawing board.

The new family of TDI products from PROTO will be the Space release. Decks will be available Summer 2016 and the next generation of TDI necks will debut to the public Holiday 2016, after they arrive from outer space containing alien technology from the future.

All Orion and Space TDI components will be interchangeable, however some may require slight modifications depending on which release and family are being mated together. Older Orion deck extrusions will require slight modification to fit the recessed dovetails of the new Integrated Orion neck.

INNOVATE

All next generation TDI decks have the original 6-hole Universal Braking System (UBS) replaced with a 2-bolt-infinite-slide UBS which allows any 2-hole-center-mounted brake to be adjusted anywhere along the slot to fit up to 125mm wheels. Rear axle lowered for peg clearance. Drop-outs cut flat for flush mount tubular pegs increasing axle strength and drop-out reinforcement.
